Snowbiters
Saber-toothed pack predators of the Sub-zero Summits, intelligent enough to build igloo communities and coordinate their hunts.
Snowbiters — Classified as Feral and Hazardous, the Snowbiters are among the most terrifying and relentless mammals in all of Baroque, serving as the dominant apex predators of the Sub-zero Summits and the single greatest ongoing threat to the people of Nivora, whose entire military culture and way of life has been shaped around the constant pressure these creatures apply. Physically, the Snowbiter is a massive, wolf-like, saber-toothed four-legged beast covered in thick coats of white and grey fur that have, on most individuals, taken on patches of deep red from the sheer accumulated volume of blood soaked into them over a lifetime of hunting — their canine teeth are long, sharp, and perpetually stained with dried blood and gore, and nearly every Snowbiter carries visible scarring from a life of relentless, fearless combat. What makes the Snowbiter particularly dangerous is not just its raw physicality but its intelligence — the creature operates at a cognitive level nearly equal to a human, allowing it to form organized hunting packs, build and maintain igloo communities where they rest between hunts, and coordinate attacks with a level of strategic awareness that makes them far more than simple animals. They make no gender distinctions within their social structure and show absolute loyalty to their own pack while dominating everything else around them with zero sense of self-preservation or fear — a Snowbiter will take on any opponent regardless of size or threat, making them as psychologically terrifying as they are physically deadly. Their diet consists entirely of the flesh of any living creature, and they supplement their water intake by chewing ice directly, meaning the frozen wasteland of the Sub-zero Summits provides them with everything they need to thrive. Their primary weakness is heat, which can overwhelm them quickly given their adaptation to extreme cold, and while the theoretical potential for taming exists — they can be drawn by flesh and blood — their high intelligence makes them extremely difficult to exploit or control in practice.
